Autism2Ability is currently developing iPad apps for individuals with autism spectrum disorders to follow them throughout life. Our iPad first app called “Talk” uses almost 700 different commonly used phrases organized into logical categories and linked with easy to understand representational images for an individual with autism to use to communicate. The user finds the phrase or visual representation of a word and they choose it on the screen. The Ipad will then speak or “TALK” the selected word or phrase.
We feel the design and programming of the application far exceeds the competitors in the market place. To maximize the function and use experience of the “TALK” app, we utilize professional designers to create and modify images for each phrase. We also consult with a board of certified experts to review and provide feedback on both the phrases chosen and the layout of the application, making modifications to accommodate for the needs they see.The final phase of development which focuses on the ability for parents and older users to customize and modify the application to their specific needs is underway.
Two common flaws plague most competing products. They are either cumbersome to set up, or they have too small of initial set of words and phrases. The “TALK” app is going to be designed so it can be used “out-of-the-box” without a lot of set up required, but also allow for a lot of customization when desired. The first level of customization will be presets for certain age groups. The second level of customization will be more complete control over items in the app. Users will have the ability to add pictures and record their own phrases to add to any category they choose. They will also be able to modify the available phrases. We are excited about the possibilities of this product and the effects it will have with the families and individuals with autism spectrum disorder. This is the fist of many products we will be developing to help children and adults with autism reach their highest potential.
